Home Education & The Shine Learning Programme – Unit 1

As home educators we are fortunate. We have the freedom to learn what we choose, travel and develop relationships with those we have something in common, rather than because we are the same age as our peers. For home educators we have a 10%, so pay just £134.10 which means that the cost of specialist support is just £2.57 per week!

Unit 1 of The Shine Learning Programme, 52-week course. Google Classroom

For those with a diagnosis of dyslexia or not, the cost of multi-sensory support has proved to be a barrier for many sections of our communities. Using Google Classroom, specialist support and dyslexia tuition is now available as a distance learning programme, to study at a time and a place to suit you. Multi-sensory learning is at the centre of everything we do and provides the amazing results we have achieved with over thirty two years of experience assessing and supporting those with and without additional needs; this first unit is no exception. All course notes are available for you to print, and to use whenever and however you choose. What we do have now is an option for most of the cost to be completed on a device. This 52-week course, provides the following: monthly meets to answer any questions that may have arisen as you attempt each task, unlimited email support and lifetime access to the course, with marking, support and feedback for 12 months. A Certificate of Completion is included.

We teach our children at home, either full or part-time. It is not necessary to be a qualified teacher to do so. We know our children best, therefore, we can facilitate their learning in the knowledge that they will learn and, hopefully, learn to love learning.

Home education means that parents take responsibility for their child’s education, rather than delegating it to a school.

If your child is in school, you should tell the school if you plan to educate them at home. The school must accept this. They can refuse if you want to send your child to school for some of the time – flexi-schooling.

If your child is attending school because of a School Attendance Order, you must get permission from your local council before you can educate them at other than at school. You may get a School Attendance Order if the local council thinks your child is not getting an education.

You have 15 days to provide evidence that you’ve registered your child with the school listed in the order or that you’re giving them a home education. If you do not, you could be prosecuted or given a fine

Below is an example of a letter for parents to withdraw a child from a state school in England and Wales.

School’s name

School’s address

Dear [insert the head teacher’s name here]

Re: name of child and date of birth

After careful consideration, I have decided to withdraw [insert your child’s name here] from school in order to take personal responsibility for their education. Please delete their name from the register in accordance with Education (Pupil Registration) Regulation 8(1)(d) 2006, as they are now receiving education otherwise than at school.

We will ensure that our son/daughter is provided with an efficient full-time education suitable to his/her age, ability, aptitude and to any special educational needs.

Please will you confirm receipt of this letter and inform us of the date that [insert your child’s name here] was removed from the register.

Yours sincerely

The procedure to withdraw a child from a state school in Scotland is completely different from that in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is described in detail on the Schoolhouse website.

Home education in the UK and the law

Home education is legal throughout the UK, but the laws in the four countries of the UK (England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales) are not identical.

It is up to each family to ensure that their child receives an appropriate education. Some families choose to use a structured curriculum, others pick and choose educational books. A number of families follow the ‘autonomous’ style of education. This means that they follow the child’s interests, learning through discussion and life in general. In my experience and those of other families in our community, this can be an incredibly rewarding and effective method of learning.

If your child has special educational needs (SEN)

If your child has SEN and attends a special school, you will need to get the council’s permission to educate them at home. You do not need the council’s permission if your child attends a mainstream school, even if they have an education, health and care (EHC) plan.

The Shine Learning Programme is the perfect curriculum, whether your child or teenager has SEN or not. With English and maths resources, all SEN inclusive, expert dyslexia support, free online live meets each week and a marking service to monitor progress and develop individualised programmes of learning.
