Functional skills: English & Maths

Functional Skills qualifications enable learners to develop confidence and fluency in maths and English. Functional skills are life skills. They are an essential first step on your learning journey or career. Functional Skills provides you with transferable, real-life skills that employers, colleges, and universities value. These courses aim to allow you to demonstrate real-life English and Maths skills and achieve a qualification as an alternative route to GCSES or develop your skills as an end in itself.

At Planet Diversity, we help many home-educated young people, adults, and school leavers achieve their functional skills qualifications in the comfort of their own homes, workplaces, or training centres. We aim to equip students with the practical skills to maximise the benefits of education, work, and everyday life, and help all learners function more confidently, effectively, and independently.

Special education needs: Having additional needs does not mean you cannot demonstrate knowledge. 95% of our learners have a SEN, and our results speak for themselves.

Our Functional Skills maths and English qualifications have been designed to support learners of all ages and levels in developing and confidently demonstrating the practical skills needed in real-life situations.

It is unnecessary to work from entry level to level 2. You can start at the point that is most appropriate for you. Each course is approximately 50 hours of guided learning, which varies slightly from Level to Level. Entry requirements – There are no formal entry requirements for this course. Please get in touch with us to discuss your situation.

Functional Skills for Apprenticeships

All apprentices should be supported in improving their mathematics and English skills. Depending on the level of maths and English they’ve already achieved, and the apprenticeship being taken, studying maths and English is usually required for each learner to complete the apprenticeship successfully.

Details are in the apprenticeship standard or SASE framework, though generally:

  • Level 2 apprentices need maths and English at Level 1 and have to attempt all elements of the Level 2 qualification
  • Level 3 apprentices need maths and English at Level 2
  • There may be extra requirements for higher-level apprenticeships or particular industry roles
